This is a gem modeled after one of the representative works of Chokan Sano, the early modern master craftsman. This box is called "jikirou" and is used mainly in the tea ceremony to serve sweets. Chokan used a unique technique to express peony arabesque (also called "Fuki grass") in rich colors, and skillfully designed and painted the character for "Fugi" on the inside of the body and lid.The "嘉永歳製" on the front of the lid means that it was made during the Kaei era (1848-1854) in which Chokan lived. ==============Chokan Sano (1791-1863)Master craftsman of lacquerware at the end of the Edo period.Born in Kyoto as the second son of a lacquerware wholesaler.In his prime, he traveled to various places to study lacquer techniques, and after studying in Edo (Tokyo), he returned to Kyoto and took the name "Chokan" (長寛).He was especially good at black lacquer painting and always tried to create innovative designs.
