"I was hiking along the Snake River, well before sunrise, hoping for a bull elk to cross with his harem."While waiting, I noticed a bald eagle perched in a pine tree on the opposit e bank. I gauged the wind and knew that if the eagle took flight before the sun got too high, it could be a very special shot. So I rotated my rig to the eagle, while I continued listening to a bugling elk that had not yet shown himself."I kid you not—at the very instant this elk emerges from the shadows on the river bank, the bald eagle takes flight.
