On offer is an interesting, original 1845 - 1848 manuscript ledger book relative to the economy and trade in Salem, Massachusetts and Kittery, Maine. The first 33-1/4 pages are dated Salem, Feb. 1845 thru Oct. 1846, and deal almost exclusively with tobacco sales, i.e. cigarettes, sixes, yarra cigars, snuff, light Cuba filled cigars, plug tobacco, Rupee snuff, C F cigars, matches etc. Listed in those "tobacco" pages are 4 purchases by the famed "Salem L[ight] Infantry". The remainder of the account book [83 or so pages] is dated Kittery [Maine] Jan. 1847 - Jan. 1848 and is essentially a general goods store account book detailing the sales of dry goods, food, seeds, drink, tools, wood, meat, equipment, building materials, etc. Laid in at back of book is a short letter about an unpaid account in which the writer says "..it will be no use for you to carry this book into Courts" signed "B. P. G." Approximately 9.5 x 8 inches the cover is well-worn and the approximately 118 handwritten pages in very good condition though the last 8 pages are loose.
