Carefully made by Kiso wood craftsmen, the bonito shaving box is made from straight-grained Kiso hinoki (Japanese cypress). Known for its durability and resistance to water and moi sture, Kiso hinoki can be used for a long time. To create the bonito shaving box, Yamaichi uses the center dense portion of wood called the “masame” (straight grain), therefore, there is no need to worry about cracks or wood warps. ■DetailsThe shaving box is both pleasing to the eye and smooth to the touch because of the parallel grain lines of straight-grained wood. Applied to the “kanna dai” (plane) is the bamboo leaved oak, known for its excellent wear resistance, and applied to the blade is the very sharp Niigata’s Yoita Uchihamano. Just like the bonito box, it comes with a lid made from Kiso hinoki which can prevent the entry of dust and helps maintain hygienic storage.
