This is a design we adapted especially for the tenugui format, based on tigers that appear in the sketch compilation Hokusai Manga, illustrated by ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai in the Edo era. It expresses the majesty of the tiger through its wild gaze.The word manga, as used here, means sketch, and is meant to explain that the series is composed of whatever Hokusai felt like drawing at the moment. The first volume was published in 1814, when Hokusai was 55. He already had over 200 apprentices, and he made the illustrations for people he could not instruct directly. Hokusai Manga displays exuberant depictions of a wide array of subjects, including people, animals, and scenery. And this tenugui design captures that same charm. Tigers are regarded as symbols of military might because they can travel 4,000 kilometers and return, all in a day. With their beautiful stripes, they are also popular as wards to keep evil spirits away. This tenugui is perfect not only for people who love animal designs, but also as a placemat for Japanese-style meals and interior decoration for areas inside the entranceway, as befits the tiger's role as a ward against evil.
