The German Army created an armoured personnel carrier in 1938 based on the 3-ton half track. Hanomag Hannoversch Machinenbau was responsible for the running gear and Bussing-NAG fo r the armoured superstructure. The prototype was quickly developed and tested by the Germans at the Kumahsdorf Proving Ground before being mass produced as the Armoured Personnel Carrier Hanomag Sdkfz 251/1, which became associated with the highly active mechanized corps during the war.
