Starting in 1974, 13 unsolved murders occurred in California. The investigators were stumped as to who was responsible. Investigators then started using public genealogy databases and matched that with the victims' relatives. Their efforts finally resulted in identifying Joseph James DeAngelo as the killer. Using DNA information obtained from genealogical sites, investigators have solved many cold cases and helped identify several Jane and John Does.
