This large volume gives a very detailed history of Gloucester, Massachusetts down through the Revolutionary War era. The post-war era is covered more briefly in several chapters, i ncluding one devoted exclusively to Rockport, which was set off from Gloucester as an independent town in 1840. The emphasis throughout is on the residents of the town. There are hundreds of brief genealogical sketches scattered through the work which are intended to account for the early settlers from each family, and some of their noteworthy descendants. There are also lists of residents who had settled in Gloucester by 1650, 1700, and later dates, as well as the usual civil lists of various officers. Some mention is made of those Gloucester families which emigrated to Falmouth and New Gloucester, Maine. Appendices and an index to full-names, places and subjects add to the value of this work.
