Northampton County is one of the more genealogical significant counties. Many families settled in Northampton County for a few years, a generation, or more, before moving on into o ther parts of the North Carolina coastal plain region, the North Carolina Piedmont region, or into South Carolina, Tennessee, or other states. Northampton County became a bridge between the older settlements of Virginia and the newer ones to the south and west. Northampton County was formed in 1741 from the parent county of Bertie, and was one of the parents of Hertford County formed in 1759.
