Poolesville, located in Montgomery County, Maryland, was named for its first storekeeper, John Poole II. Poole's Store was designated as the local mail stop because the post office was included in his store. The town was a shopping mecca for area farmers and their families until the 1930s. Because of its proximity to the Potomac River, Poolesville was the sight of large troop encampments during the Civil War. Telegraph dispatches from as far away as New York carried the name of Poolesville in the newspapers of the day.
