Mendocino County occupies over ninety miles of California's rugged North Pacific Coast. Populated only by native peoples until 1851, a flood of immigration began when the immense s tands of ancient redwood forests were discovered by entrepreneurs in 1852. In the late nineteenth century local newspapers provided a record of events important to the local population. Even after a person moved to another area, events in the individual's life were often reported.
