Part 1 contains descriptions of crests in standard heraldic nomenclature arranged alphabetically by the name of their owner; mottos are also included. Part 2 contains engravings of a large proportion of the crests described. Thus given a surname one can find the crest and motto associated with various families of that name. New compilation, by an assistant to the current Garter King of Arms, provides an index to the crests illustrated in Fairbairn's work. It is based on the heraldic components of the crests, and makes it possible to work backwards from the description of the crest to the bearer of the arms.
