Comprising a Period of Two Hundred Years from the First Settlement of the Town; with Biographical Sketches of a few of the Most Respectable Inhabitants Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was one of the first four towns established in the state. Its beginnings are generally dated to 1623, when David Thompson set up a trading post at Odiorne's Point. This history is presented in chronological order to 1823, and is filled with interesting historical and biographical data. A short appendix reproduces several early documents. The author graduated from Dartmouth College in 1775 and served as Clerk of the Superior Court of New Hampshire for forty-two years. New full name + subject index.
