The narrative is arranged by year, beginning with Haverhill's founding in 1640 and ending with a few brief notes for 1831, the year prior to the book's original publication. During its first seventy years, the town was on the frontier and subject to Indian depredations, which are discussed extensively. Many early settlers are named in accounts of births, marriages, and deaths as well as church and school activities, servant agitations, disease eruptions, military actions, businesses, and the like. Appendices identify ministers, college graduates, town representatives, business owners, and officials of local societies. New full name index.
