Papers read before the society at its quarterly meetings cover subjects from colonial through post-Civil War times. Essays include lists of the names of officers and regular soldie rs; biographical sketches and a study of Abraham Lincoln's ancestry in Berks County. Other essays cover county schools, churches, coal furnaces and caves. Essays on the influence of Moravian and Huguenot settlements contain many prominent family names such as Bertolet, Bickel, Boyer, Conrad, De Benneville, De Harcourt, De Turk, Hiester, and Keim. Berks County's most famous son is probably Conrad Weiser, a man of fairness and integrity, trusted and respected by Indians and settlers alike. His diplomatic influence among the Indian tribes was critical to the English victory in the French and Indian war. In addition to a complete membership list at the beginning of the book, the original and a new everyname index are included. The book is presented as graphic images, so the user sees the work just as it was originally published. It is intended to look and function very much like a "real" book.
