The author, William Holcomb Webster, was determined to write and publish a history and genealogy of the Governor John Webster family from the time of its founding in America. "Afte r serving as a soldier in the Union Army, he entered the civil service of the Government in the Pension Office of the War Department and became Superintendent of the Old War and Navy Records. Nothing could have aided his cherished purpose more, for it gave him access to the official records of all the wars…As a result, few family histories will contain more abundant and accurate accounts of military service than this." Upon his death, the Rev. Melville R. Webster picked up the mantle of family historian and genealogist in order to complete William's investigation and added material from other branches of the family. This volume spans ten generations of the Webster family descended from Governor John and Agnes Webster. "Each Chapter is sub-divided into 'Divisions,' 'Sections,' and 'Numbered Paragraphs'." Those named in the Divisions are children of the ancestor at the head of the Chapter. Those named in the Sections are his grandchildren.
