In this volume, Mr. Drake endeavors to give the history of the "Rise and Fall of the Taverns" of New England. "Not only were they a recognized need, but…one of the time-honored institutions of the old country…Travellers and sojourners had to be provided for even in a wilderness. Therefore taverns were licensed as fast as new villages grew up." They quickly became the one known landmark within each neighborhood of a town and in the old almanacs distances were always computed between the inns, rather than from town to town. In addition to the history of the tavern in general, Mr. Drake covers signboard humor and Cole's Inn, The Bakers' Arms, the Golden Ball Tavern and the Hancock Tavern in particular. He also provides a list of taverns and tavern owners as well as numerous illustrations, including signboards. This is a tangible media product shipped via mail.
