Composed of yeomen from the "butternut" portion of Ohio, the 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry fought with distinction in some of the fiercest battles of the Civil War. Colonel James W ashburn acknowledged the unit's distinguished combat record during an address following the Battle of Cedar Creek in October 1864: "You have made for your regiment a name and a fame that will outlive you all, and to which your children and your children's children will point with pride in the years of the future."
