The 1880 census contained the following information: family number, name of each person, color, sex, age, relationship to head of the household, children born within the census year, marital status, occupation, state of health (if ill or disabled) and nativity of each person. The author has annotated the census with birth and death dates, maiden names, marriage dates, names of previous spouses and data on these spouses, later marriages, names of parents, counties of birth, where each family lived in previous census years and if each was listed in the 1900 Owsley County census. In compiling this data, the author has used no less than 57 different sources, including: Owsley County census records from 1850 to 1900; newspaper articles from the Owsley County Courier (1934-1952); newsletters from the Estill County and Lee County Historical Societies; census records of neighboring counties; cemetery records; and personal records and documents. In this revised edition, the author has added sources, allowing some further annotations. Those listed in the 1880 Owsley County census had ties or roots in the Kentucky counties of Breathitt, Clay, Estill, Floyd, Harlan, Jackson, Knox, Knott, Laurel, Lawrence, Lee, Letcher, Madison, Morgan, Perry, Pike, Rockcastle, and Wolfe; plus the Tennessee counties of Anderson, Claiborne, Grainger, Hancock, Hawkins, Sullivan, and Washington; plus the Virginia counties of Bedford, Grayson, Lee, Rockcastle, Russell, Scott, Tazewell, Washington, and Wythe; plus the North Carolina counties of Buncombe, Guilford, Orange, Rowan, Stokes, and Wilkes; plus Atlanta, Georgia; Morgan County, Indiana; and Lynn County, Missouri.
