"The aim of this book is to help one gain an insight into the minds of our ancestors-their beliefs, convictions, and ideals. The titles of books found in estates, probably more tha n any other single item, provide a clue to those intellectual, religious, political and social forces that shaped their minds. It is important, in observing titles of books, to note the works in the estates of the rectors, clerks of the court, schoolmasters, professionals, county officials-all those who may have had an influence in molding the minds of individuals-as well as the books in the estates of one's own ancestors." This inventory of books opens with a brief background to books found in estates, 1650 to 1852; followed by books found in estates of Northumberland County, Virginia, between 1650 and 1852.
