"During the period between the years 1877 and 1890, nearly all of the burial places on Long Island that had been in general and parish use prior to 1800 were visited by the writer, and careful transcripts made by him of such inscriptions as could then be found." Various private family grounds were also visited. Southold, Shelter Island and Easthampton form a portion of Suffolk County, located in eastern Long Island, and epitaphs, along with any related information, are grouped by these three locations. Genealogical notes and abstracts from wills add to the wealth of genealogical data drawn from these transcriptions, and it is of additional interest that a large number of early settlers in this area were of English birth or extraction.
