In Sonoma County, the earliest naturalization records date from 1841 and consist of both declarations of intention and petitions for naturalization. State, district and local court s handled the process of naturalization up to 1906 when the Federal Govt. established the Immigration and Naturalization Service. More than 6,600 persons applied for naturalization in Sonoma Co. pre-1906. Nine index books, containing records spanning 1841-1906, were discovered in the Sonoma County Archives in 1996.
