An interesting and unusual piece of literature, this work includes both notes and an appendix from the original edition published in 1840. It also boasts a map of Chenango Point in 1797, an illustration of Court Street in the Town of Binghamton, New York (drawn in 1810), and a new combined full-name and subject index. The Village of Binghamton is the shire town of Broome County. It is located 150 miles southwest of Albany, just seven miles from the Pennsylvania line. This work is a history of the town of Binghamton from the time of its settlement up to the 1870s. The beginning chapters provide the reader with information about the region: geography, geological characteristics and landmarks, its namesake William Bingham, the town's first survey, buildings, the court house, commerce, trade and industry, educational facilities, and the gradual settlement of this area. We learn of the earliest Christian society in Chapter VII, a Baptist church, soon followed by the Dutch Reformed church. This work is made invaluable because of the numerous stories scattered throughout describing the history and hardships of the early settlers to this region and the American Colonies in general.
