Carroll County was established in late 1833 from territory ceded by the Choctaw Indians in 1830. A few settlers were in the area during the Indian occupation, but many new emigrants from the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama moved into the newly created county. In the 1870s, the northern, eastern and western areas of the county were taken to form part of the new counties of Grenada, Leflore, and Montgomery. Carroll County is one of several counties having two county seats: Carrollton and Vaiden. The major portion of this book was compiled in order to relate information about the inhabitants of Carroll County from its beginning through 1850. It contains abstracts of land plats, giving page number of the original plat book, purchaser, acreage, and year: abstracts of probate records, giving page number, date, and names of all parties involved; personal tax rolls; and 1850 slave schedule from the Federal census; listings of volunteers in the Mexican War; and genealogies of forty-three early families, some of which have descendants living in the county today. Also included are abstracts of all the wills and divorces found from the formation of the county to 1875, naming all parties involved.
