A Canadian poet and professor at Bishop's University, Gustafson wrote over 20 volumes of poetry and prose and edited several anthologies of verse. Gustafson's early poetry, includi ng this volume of sonnets, owes a significant debt to Gerard Manley Hopkins, while Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens and W. B.
