Thomas Lewis (1689-17 49?), a controversial preacher, received his BA from Corpus Christi College, Oxford, in 1711 and was ordained in 1713. He was forced into hiding due to the libelous nature of his publication, The Scourge, in Vindication of the Church of England, 1717, in which he criticized Protestant dissenters. He continued to publish controversial writings, however, on such topics as the dangers of burying the dead in churchyards.
