James Williams Tyrrell, explorer and mine promoter, practised engineering in Hamilton, Ontario until 1893 when he embarked with his brother Joseph on a canoe trip across the interi or of Keewatin District. His book describing the expedition, Across the Sub-Arctics of Canada (1897), is a classic of northern travel writing. In 1900 Tyrrell led a Dominion Lands Survey expedition through the Keewatin and issued the report of which this is a part. Show more
