Rene-Theophile-Hyacinthe Laennec (1781-1826) invented the stethoscope in 1816 and pioneered its use in diagnosing various chest conditions (see Plate VIII at rear). He also researc hed the skin tumors we know as melanomas, described the role that organ tissues play in disease, and named the liver disease called cirrhosis.
