Built for HVAC returns calling for a nominal 10x20x1, this Aerostar filter measures an actual 9 1/2" x 19 1/2" x 3/4". The smaller actual size is intentional and standard across th e filter industry, giving the filter room to slide into the grille without binding. Pick your MERV based on what you're actually trying to catch. MERV 8 covers everyday dust, lint, and pollen at the lowest airflow resistance. MERV 11 handles pet dander, smoke, and most household allergens. MERV 13 traps fine particulates including smoke from wildfires, bacteria, and virus-carrying droplets. Higher MERV means more filtration but also more static pressure on your blower, so MERV 13 is best suited to systems built within the last 10 to 15 years with adequate return ducting. The pleated electrostatic media provides several times the surface area of a basic fiberglass filter, which is why this filter outlasts cheap throwaways even at higher MERV grades.
