The session will discuss the origins of the term biomimicry and its evolution in architecture. Unlike biomorphism, which is about mimicking natural forms, in biomimicry nature is a source of inspiration for the harmony evoked by the distribution of forces, and the environmental performance evoked by the simulation of natural phenomena in the materiality and construction of buildings. In times of climate emergency, advances in computer modelling, and the omnipresence of machine learning biomimicry can become the catalyst of encountering issues related to economy, environment, and society. Through the historical perspective of the evolution of biomimicry and through case studies, the seminar will suggest an architecture of a new materiality that is bio-inspired and carbon negative. Practicing architects are now empowered by bio-inspired toolkits for effective and environmentally conscious strategies for lighting, heating, ventilation, water capture and storage, lower temperature, lower pressure, lower toxicity to generate resource efficiencies. Professor Maria VogiatzakiMaria is an educator, researcher and architect, who works at the School of Architecture, Anglia Ruskin University, UK. Maria is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her recent book Architectural Materialisms: Nonhuman Creativity was published by Edinburgh University Press. Her PhD at the University of Bath, School of Architecture investigated the design process of non-standard architecture. Her research work and education lie in the materiality of architecture. Maria is a free-lance architect, lectures and sits at design, Masters and PhD juries and committees around the world. Maria has been the founder and Director of the Masters Programme ‘Advanced Design: Innovation and Transdisciplinarity in Architectural Design’ at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Maria is the editor-in-chief of Scopus Indexed refereed journal archidoct. Her Masters students won nine international awards and prizes on their design diploma theses (2016-2020). Maria is a chartered architect in Greece (Technical Chamber of Greece) and the UK. She is a member of RIBA and ARB, the Association of University Teachers and a member of the Design Society.
