Neurodiversity is a concept that postulates the evolutionary and universal design of diversity in human neuro-cognitive capabilities and potential. When architects, designers and interested parties discuss ‘Inclusive Environments’ it often relates to gender and disability, specifically access for individuals with physical disabilities. By considering ‘Neurodiversity: A New Paradigm’ we discuss the prevalence of ‘different minds’ in relation to universal design and inclusive environments. Adaptive Reuse During the module, you will be introduced to ideas, such as the IDEA toolkit, concepts and 'mixed-mode' strategies enabling existing environments to be more inclusive, without the need for specific accommodations and adaptations. Diverse Legacies We will look at continued strategies, standards and methodologies for optimising the human, operational and commercial performance. This includes psychological safety, education, communication, awareness, user profiling and prototyping to increase performance, productivity and provide inclusive environments that enable everyone to thrive. It wasn't long before her experience within the built environment began to change.
