George Villiers, Second Duke of Buckingham (1628-1687) was, in addition to being a dramatist, also wrote poetry, political pamphlets and satires. He patronised the arts and was a p ublic figure like his father, the 1st Duke of Buckingham who was long rumoured to be the lover of King James I, appearing in fictional form in one of Alexander Dumas's novels on the Three Musketeers. In The Rehearsal, first staged in 1671, Villiers aims his satire at John Dryden with a self-reflexive look at the staging of a theatrical production. Show more
