Daughter of an admiral whose wealth came from prize money, Jane Digby [1807-1881] was a world trav eler who lived a dramatic life. At 17 she married an English lord, 4 years later left him for an Austrian prince, left the prince for the court of King Ludwig of Bavaria and married a baron there, whom she left for a Greek count, and then moved on to an Austrian brigand. Eventually, she died in the Ottoman Empire (in Damascus) the wife of an Arab shiek 20 years her junior, with whom she had a long, happy marriage. Her adventures didn't end with her final marriage - she rode her horse into battle with her husband and helped fund his people's desert wars.
