During his mental training, Abercrombie became interested in the mental side of medicine as well as the lives of the poor. He had an office in the poorer part of Aberdeen, was a sh arp observer and kept records of all cases of interest. Many of these were elaborated into papers, which for the most part appeared in the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal from 1816 to 1824.
