Elliott (1781-1849) led the fight to repeal Britain's Corn Laws, which imposed restrictions and tariffs on imported grain. The laws were designed to keep grain prices high to favou r domestic producers but raised the price of food enough to cause hardships among Britain's poor. Watkins dedicates his book to Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, a Conservative who achieved repeal of the Corn Laws with the support of the Whigs in Parliament. Show more
