In 1790, Montgomery County, Virginia was a vast domain. It included territory now in twenty-two (22) Virginia and West Virginia counties: [Virginia--Bland, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, G iles, Grayson, Montgomery, Pulaski, Roanoke, Smythe, Tazewell, Wythe; West Virginia--Boone, Fayette, Kanawha, Logan, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Raleigh, Summers, Wyoming.] Two types of records are abstracted in this work--land records and tax records. Emphasis has been placed on locating the residence of each taxpayer. A 16" x 24" map which the author drafted for use in connection with this work assists in this task.
