Publication of the letters of Thomas Wentworth (1593-1641), Earl of Strafforde, Knight of the most Noble Order of the Garter, and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Wentworth was a suppor ter of King Charles I in the years leading up to the English Civil War. As Lord Lt. of Ireland, his rule is remembered as tyrannical, but productive. During the conflict with Scotland, Wentworth was involved in several plots to undermine Parliament and secure his own power, including a scheme to devalue the English currency. Charles I was obligated to sign Wentworth's death warrant, granting the execution of one of his most influential allies.
