Hugh Conway was the pen name of Bristol native Frederick John Fargus (1847-1885). This Victorian "shilling shocker" sold 352,000 copies by 1887 and was translated into six European languages. It was made into a stage play in London in 1884. Its popularity is not surprising, considering it combines murder, amnesia, politics, and fantasy. One of the author`s admirers was the poet Emily Dickinson who wrote to her cousins: "A friend sent me 'Called Back'. It is a haunting story and greatly impressive to me." The last letter she wrote to those cousins, written on the day Dickinson died, contained just four words "Little Cousins - Called back." The words also appear on Dickinson's gravestone. Show more
