Producer Kumeu River has been praised for being some of the best producers of Chardonnay outside Burgundy! And at a fraction of the price. Doesn't that sound enticing? Based in the north island of New Zealand, 25 kilometres northwest of Aukland. Owned and operated by the Brajkovich family, who immigrated from Croatia in 1937 and established their vineyard not long after. The focus is primarily on Chardonnay, producing many different single vineyard releases each year, as well as their 'Village' range, which is their entry-level. They also produce a small amount of Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Tasting Note Vibrant aromas of peach, nectarine, pear, and white flowers leap from the glass. Zippy citrus acidity and a dry finish. A gentle whole-bunch press of the fruit is then fermented using only wild yeast, with some extended maturation on the yeast lees.
