Founded in 1901, the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment's "Blackhorse" nickname has an oddly uncertain origin — historians still debate whether it traces to the black horses the unit rode in its early years, or to a 1924 fire that blackened a nearby California town with soot. Its motto, "Allons" (French for "Let's Go"), has stuck through Vietnam, the Gulf War, and Iraq.
