Front cover reads "Mr. Clarke's Discourse, to the Humane Society." Not the modern version of the Humane Society caring for animals, but an organization established in 1786 by a gro up of Bostonians who wished to find ways to prevent the needless death and drowning from shipwrecks. Modeled after a British Society of the same name, the society provided an awards programme with a stipend or medal for saving a life. At rear is a listing of premiums given by the trustees to persons who saved various individuals, including the crew of the ship Rodney, wrecked on Duxborough beach. Also lists officers and honorary members. In Appendix at rear are letters from William Lyman, Dr. William Hawes, and Benjamin Rush. Show more
