c. 1941–1957 Cuban Popular Entertainment Print Archive of Cancioneros, Sheet Music, and Celebrity Tribute Material Documenting Radio, Music Distribution, and Transnational Performance Culture
On offer is a group of four pieces of Cuban entertainment ephemera documenting the production, circulation, and consumption of popular music and celebrity culture in mid-20th-century Havana. Spanning the early 1940s through the late 1950s, the material traces Republican-era Cuban music from advertiser-supported radio performance, to mass-market lyric distribution, to formal sheet music publication, alongside print responses to major figures of Latin American cinema. Archive Inclusions The earliest item in the group, a 1941 issue of Hits Musicales, is explicitly tied to Cuban radio broadcasting networks. Issued as a cancionero, it centers on the Mexican performer Tito Guízar and situates his popularity within the framework of,“las audiciones radiofónicas de Cuba, la Cadena Crusellas.” [“the radio broadcasts of Cuba, the Crusellas Network”]. The publication further identifies him as, “artista exclusivo de Jabón Candado.” [“Exclusive artist for Jabón Candado”]. It includes lyrics to songs associated with his performances. The booklet demonstrates how radio exposure was converted into printed form, allowing audiences to reproduce and internalize broadcast repertoire. A decade later, the Suplemento de la revista “Maracas” (December 1953) documents Cuban reception to the death of Mexican film star Jorge Negrete. Issued under the title, “Homenaje Póstumo al Charro Cantor” [“Posthumous Tribute to the Singing Charro”], the text records the intensity of public response across Cuba: “Cuba… se ha vestido de luto con el infausto suceso.” [“Cuba… has been plunged into mourning by this tragic event.] The supplement includes essays, biographical material, and photographic reproductions, providing direct evidence of the transnational circulation of celebrity culture between Mexico and Cuba. The remaining two items shift from audience consumption to musical production. A lyric sheet for “Así Mi Bien” (Rosita Pino), issued by Peer y Compañía (Habana), is present without musical notation, reflecting a lower-cost or partial distribution format. There is a manuscript inscription on the front:“Tony Tejera… de su autora Rosita Pino.”[ "Tony Tejera… by its author Rosita Pino"]. Tejera appears again in the final item of the archive, printed sheet music for “Las Pascuas” (1957), with: “letra y música: Tony Tejera…arreglo: Pepe Delgado” [Lyrics and music: Tony Tejera; Arrangement: Pepe Delgado]. Issued by the same Havana publisher, the piece represents the formal end of the distribution chain with arranged, notated, and performance-ready sheet music. Historical and Research Significance Taken together, the group documents a complete and internally coherent system of mid-century Cuban popular music culture. The Hits Musicales cancionero demonstrates the role of advertiser-supported radio in generating demand; the Maracas supplement records the parallel circulation of celebrity across national boundaries; the lyric sheet captures informal, composer-level exchange; and the sheet music preserves the finalized, performative form of the repertoire. The presence of Tony Tejera in both manuscript and printed contexts provides a particularly clear internal linkage within the group. Condition Four printed items, varying formats (booklet, magazine supplement, sheet music, lyric sheet). All exhibit moderate to heavy toning, edge wear, creasing, and handling consistent with inexpensive mid-century Cuban paper. The Maracas supplement shows heavier age-darkening and edge wear; the Hits Musicales booklet shows spine stress and paper fragility. The sheet music remains complete with expected wear. The lyric sheet shows creasing, staining, and manuscript inscription to the front. All items are complete, structurally sound, and fully legible.
