On offer, a handwritten letter from the Earl of Derby on election matters. Dated St. James Square, June 29, 1865. Reads: Dear Sir John I return the papersyou were kind enough to se nd methe other day. I did not think itwould be desirable in the House ofLords to raise any questions as to thecomparative claims of the rival companies.My impression is that the Governmentare disposed to do something, but throughthe local legislatures.Yours faithfully,Stanley Edward George Geoffrey Smith-Stanley (1799 -1869), 14th earl of Derby, was an English statesman, important as leader of the Conservative Party during the long period 1846–68, and three term Prime Minister. He was known before 1834 as Edward Stanley, and from 1834 to 1851 as Lord Stanley. He is one of only four British prime ministers to have three or more separate periods in office. He was one of England’s greatest parliamentary orators; nevertheless, he has no great political reputation. The recipient, Sir John Heron-Maxwell (1808-1885) 6th Baronet of Springkell and a captain in the Royal Navy. One page letter, 5-½ x 4-½ inches, with age toning and creasing from prior folds.
