On offer, a handwritten letter from the Earl of Derby on election matters. Dated St. James Square, June 29, 1865. Reads: Dear Sir John I have received your letter and address; the latter appearsquite safe and unobjectionable. I neednot say that I wish you every success; butGreenwich is not a very easy seat for aConservative to win.Yours Sincerely,Derby Edward George Geoffrey Smith-Stanley (1799 -1869), 14th earl of Derby, was an English statesman, important as leader of the Conservative Party during the long period 1846–68, and three term Prime Minister. He was known before 1834 as Edward Stanley, and from 1834 to 1851 as Lord Stanley. He is one of only four British prime ministers to have three or more separate periods in office. He was one of England’s greatest parliamentary orators; nevertheless, he has no great political reputation. The recipient, Sir John Heron-Maxwell (1808-1885) 6th Baronet of Springkell and a captain in the Royal Navy. One page letter on watermarked paper, 5-½ x 4-½ inches, with age toning and creasing from prior folds. There are some stains present, and the top and right edges are tear-aways. Good condition.
