This is a rare 19th-century Canadian "celebrity" advertising endorsement by a prominent personage. Campbell was a business partner of Sir John A. Macdonald, a Father of Confederati on, held numerous cabinet postings, including postmaster general, and became lieutenant-governor of Ontario. H. Shorey was Montreal clothier Hollis Shorey, tailor, salesman and manufacturer. At the time of this advertising campaign, Shorey was employing around 150 people in his factory and about 1,450 outside, but, by 1900, it was no longer in business. Show more
