Mellers [1914-2008] was a noted music critic and composer. His study and teaching of both English literature and music led him to his interest in the gradual divorce of music from the poetry or drama with which it was historically allied. The first section of the book explores the evolution of poetry and music in the 16th and 17th centuries. The second section looks at Elizabethan drama and court masque, operas, and other examples of theatrical music. Along the way he explores the meaning of art. Dennis Dobson. London. 1965. Hb, Dj.
