Title continues: "Illustrated by a Half-Sheet Map of the Country. With Notes From the Spanish and French versions, and an Appendix, Containing Copious Extracts from the Araucana of Don Alonzo de Ercilla. Translated from the Original Italian, by an American Gentleman. In Two Volumes." The author, a Jesuit, was born in Chile and studied the geography, botany, zoology, and history of the country until the Jesuits were expelled in 1768. He then moved to Italy which is why this work was first published in Italian in 1776.
