Title continues: "with Observations Upon a Recent Publication, Entitled 'A Narrative of Occurrences in the Indian Countries,' &c." The book was first privately printed by the autho r at the end of 1816 and distributed among Selkirk's friends and others interested in his enterprise. Halkett, Selkirk's brother-in-law, defends the Red River Settlement against the aggressions of the North West Company that led to the destruction of the colony in the massacre at Seven Oaks in 1816. This work was followed by a reply on behalf of the North West Company called "A Narrative of Occurrences in the Indian Countries" that was published anonymously. To counter theire statement, considered misrepresentation, this second enlarged edition of Halkett's work was prepared and published by John Murray in the same year. The appendix contains legal evidence in support of Selkirk's case against the North West Company. Halkett asks if extensive regions of British North American will ever be settled if British subjects are to be denied the protection of British laws while residing there. 100 pages of appendix and 4 of publisher's ads.
