We are increasingly interested in the surroundings which inspired Austen's new approach to novels. Mona Wilson looks at Jane Austen, Eliza Fletcher, Anne Woodrooffe, Mary Martha Bu tt, Mary Anne Schimmelpenninck, Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna, Mary Somerville, Harriet Grote. She focuses on what it was like to be a woman in the 18th century, against the contrast of the Victorianism that followed. Wilson speaks from the perspective of proto-feminism and Mary Wollstonecraft's influence on Austen and other women over time. Introduction by G. M. Young. Very good/near fine first edition but without a jacket, with slight sun fading of spine. Cresset Press, London. Printed by The Sheneval Press. 1938. Hb. USED. $60.00 Show more
