Title continues: "Being a Diary of a Winter's Route from Halifax to the Canadas, and during four months' residence in the woods on the borders of Lakes Huron and Simcoe." Sir Georg e Head, an elder brother of Sir Francis Bond Head, produced this record of his first tour of Canada in 1814-15. He was not altogether impressed with conditions, even in the largest town: "On arriving at York, I was disappointed at the first sight of the capital of Upper Canada, which ... was extremely straggling and irregular; and the inn was not by any means prepossessing" (p. 175). In his summary, he advises that only younger emigrants should attempt to settle in a colony with a severe climate: "none but the young should venture, - children, and men and women under five-and-twenty" (p. 355). Head himself was in his early thirties when he undertook his journey. Show more
